Art and Crafts This page is a source of information about art (including "fine art"), photography and the many marvelous crafts to be found in Central Oregon. Galleries galore just about says it all around here. And why would it be otherwise, when everywhere you turn there is a magnificent mountain, a languid lake, a romping rodeo, or a peaceful pasture just panting to be painted or photographed? Pride in our area prompts us to point first to our own lovely gallery, Falcon Crest, located in the clock tower building of Eagle Crest's Village Square on the east side of Cline Falls Highway. Besides having a friendly, warmly-welcoming staff, the gallery boasts works by a large number of local - and we mean very local - artists. You may find that your favorite artist is your next door neighbor in The Falls. Art is celebrated in Central Oregon with special monthly events. First Friday Gallery Walk is a Bend tradition, with most galleries open from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. Wine and light snacks are often served, but the real feast - at least for the eyes - is the art. Both downtown Bend and the Shops in the Old Mill District participate in this popular activity. For more information, including a map showing all the galleries, visit http://www.bendgalleries.com/BG/gallerywalkinfo.htm. “First” Friday means the first Friday of each month, of course. In Redmond, an Art Walk is held on the third Friday of each month. This event is called AWE (Art/Walk/Explore), and further information about locations of the galleries and special receptions in conjunction with AWE are available online at http://www.highdesertsocietyofthearts.org/. Most of the many galleries in Sisters are open daily and often feature special "meet the artist” receptions. For a list of galleries (with addresses) and information about some of the nationally renowned local artists, visit the "Arts" section of the Sisters Oregon Guide. Photographic art has special stature in Central Oregon. Bend's Cascade Camera Club, with over 100 members, is one of the largest photography clubs in the northwest. The membership ranges from novices to nationally recognized professionals. Several members are considered among the best, if not the very best, in the country in their photographic specialties. While their work is not collected in any specific gallery, it can be found on display in many locations throughout Central Oregon. The Club’s website (click link above) will give you information about specials events and showings, as well as the monthly "Program Night" and "Competition Night" meetings. And no mention of art would be complete without spotlighting the world famous Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show. Quilts may not come immediately to mind when you think “art,” but a visit to this extravaganza, with work-of-art quilts on display on just about every building in Sisters, with be an awakening. |
