Medford, population about 70,000, is the center of the Rogue Valley and the gateway to the Rogue River’s scenic and exciting whitewater rafting, kayaking, and camping. But the city itself is an attraction, with many festive events to tempt the traveler. Spring in Medford celebrates its “agri-culture,” with the Pear Blossom Parade and the Art in Bloom Festival. As the year progresses, the Jackson County Fair and the Rogue Valley Balloon Rally draw crowds. Fall in Medford brings the Jackson County Harvest Festival and a chance to “get messy” at the annual wine grape crush. Several websites provide information about Medford, including www.visitmedford.org/about.htm and www.ci.medford.or.us/.
Nearby Jacksonville boasts “gold rush roots,” and has preserved that atmosphere, making it a National Historic Landmark. It is also an arts magnet, hosting the Britt Festival concert series, which attracts hundreds of people from all across Oregon, and even some from - gasp! - California. More information about Jacksonville can be found at www.jacksonvilleoregon.org/attractions.htm.
Wine is a major attraction in the Rogue Valley. The stretch from Ashland to Grants Pass, including Illinois Valley and the smaller Applegate Valley, is designated an official American Viticulture Area (AVA). For a list of wineries providing tours and tastings, see Rogue Valley Wine Region.
